New Mexico wins big

Excerpted from the Santa Fe New Mexican

The Lady Roadrunners took a big step forward in their maturity while preserving their perfect District 1B record. NMSD outlasted the Lady Centurions of Victory Christian Academy 25-15, 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13 in Larson Gym to improve to 2-0 in district play and 13-3 overall.

Thanks to 46 assists from Mia Fernandez, the Lady Roadrunner hitters had their way. Four reached double digits in kills, led by Caldonia Wilding's 20. Maria Elena Rendon and Rosina Garcia each had 14, while Amberley Luna added 10.

NMSD head coach Stacy Nowak was particularly impressed with Luna's performance. "She had 15 attempts and 10 kills with no errors," Nowak said through an interpreter. "She improves in every game she plays in".

Additional comments: This was a team victory-all the players contributed to this win-Amanda Surdukan stepped up her game, and we could not have won this game if not for every player on the team. This was a huge win-Victory Christian is one of our biggest rivals- they are ranked #6 and #2 in two different state polls and to beat them at home was especially sweet. The girls look to build on this as they start GPSD play Friday morning against the Kansas School for the Deaf.
