USADVBryan Leyden of Shepard is 80 percent deaf in both of his ears but that hasn’t stopped him from playing in several of the school’s bands and on the boys volleyball team.

Shepard senior Bryan Leyden is one busy student.

Not only is he a starter on the Astros’ boys volleyball team, he is a percussionist with the school’s jazz band, concert band, marching band and the band that backs up the show choir.

Oh, and he is 80 percent deaf in both ears.

ICSD President makes an opening speech during the Chef de Mission

ICSDSamsun, Turkey - 20 February 2017

I am delighted to tell you that I am at the panel with the Governor of Samsun, the General Coordinator of Samsun Deaflympics, and other Esteemed Representatives of the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Turkey. After listening to their presentations, I realized once again that they are doing fantastic job for the upcoming Deaflympics. Their ultimate goal is to make Deaflympics greater and to raise the awareness of Deaf Sports movement.

Before the Chef de Mission, I had a high level meeting and was told that the 23rd Summer Deaflympics will be as good as Olympic games in Rio in 2016 and I thanked them graciously for their continuous efforts and commitment.

All of you have visited the sports venues and I believe that you can confirm the readiness for the event.

I recall that the Turkish officials asked ICSD to relocate the Deaflympics to Samsun from Ankara, the capital of Turkey. They recommended that ICSD think thorough and consider the offer to have Deaflympics hosted in Samsun. After long deliberation by the ICSD executive Board, we eventually agreed with them to relocate the games to Samsun. And now you all can see that Samsun stadium, where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held, is a more than suitable one. When I visited Samsun for the first time, Turkish representatives pointed out the ground, bare dirt, where the new stadium for the opening and closing ceremony will be built, I was in doubt, due to short timing, about the readiness of a new huge stadium. And then just recently, I saw the stadium which is almost completely done. I went inside the stadium, I am truly impressed by their commitment and the speed of their work in completing the stadium. So huge inside! So, this means that Turkey can build the venues in a timely manner. Let"s congratulate them.

When I asked you earlier to come to Samsun, most of you were afraid and hesitated to come due to the military coup in Turkey last year. Despite the mess and political situations last summer, the officials said they will still go ahead with the hosting of the 23rd Summer Deaflympics. Now as you can see, their work, preparations, handling security matters and many other issues, they are truly prepared for this summer. I really do hope that this 23rd Summer Deaflympics will exceed our expectations more than we hoped for and even wore athletes, fans and guests will come. And, the hosting of 23rd Summer Deaflympics in Samsun would not be forgotten for many years and will be important part of our history. Turkish officials took great interest to ensure that this huge event is truly remarkable and positive event as part of their own history. I believe you all will also remember those times during the 23rd Summer Deaflympics as the memorable one.

In closing, you all explored Samsun, you all can say in your heart how beautiful and safe it is.

Turkey made our heart peaceful! Thank you All!

ICSD President's Message Safety Takes Priority

Greetings to Everyone!

ICSDThere were a lot of rumors recently about unsafe environment in Samsun, Turkey during the 2017 Summer Deaflympics. I would like to share with all of you that Samsun historically has been a non-political, quiet and conservative city. In the history of Turkish Republic, no act of terrorism, or other terrifying accident ever happened in Samsun.

The 2017 Summer Deaflympics will be a tremendous success in terms of great organization and in terms of safety. Samsun is located in the North part of the Republic of Turkey on the Black Sea, 900 kilometers (560 miles) from the border of Syria. Our athletes, guests and delegates will fly to Samsun with a transfer either via Ankara or Istanbul International Airports. In both hubs, the representatives of our Organizing Committee will meet our athletes, delegates and guests in order to give them an appropriate accreditation and to help them with the further transfer to Samsun. Please do not be concerned about the logistics, leave it up to us.

Upon their arrival to Samsun, our athletes, delegates and guests will be met by the representatives of our Organizing Committee. They will be transferred further to the Deaflympics village accompanied by the police troops.

The local authorities are providing about five thousand (5,000) policemen for the entire period of the Deaflympics. This number is almost equal to the number of our athletes.

Over the past years, major terrorist acts occurred in such large cities as London, Brussels, and Madrid. One can never foresee when and if they happen again. But our Organizing Committee, ICSD and the Turkish government are doing everything possible and impossible to ensure the highest level of security for our athletes, delegates and guests.

We welcome our athletes, delegates and guests to the 2017 Summer Deaflympics!

In February, I will be in Samsun for the 2nd Chef de Mission meeting and there will be more representatives from the ICSD from all over the world. I will be back soon with more updates.

Thank you!

Great Britain Deaf FootballAll football fans love a good get together, especially when a good cause is involved. This event, is no different, and one Bolton fans particularly would enjoy.

Ashton Town chairman Mark Hayes, from my point of view, is one of the nicest blokes you’ll ever come across. He’s a superb chairman of Ashton Town as he devotes so much of his time to the club, and gives a lot back to the community.
