fremontOn the weekend of November 30th - December 2nd, the California School for the Deaf Girls Varsity Basketball squad participated in the 12th Nike Central Valley Showdown hosted by Clovis West High School (North of Fresno, CA) who won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Open Division last year.

Overall, the competition was excellent as most of the 16 teams in attendance were elite teams from Division 1 and 2. Our team had a great experience playing and watching other teams in action. We played against several players who received NCAA Division 1 offers. Several college scouts were in attendance throughout the tournament. Rufus King who travelled all the way from Wisconsin won the tournament championship. (Contributed by Head Coach Joshua Weinstock)

Central 91 Fremont 10 - 1st Round

Central (Fresno)'s size, speed and overall team play was overwhelming for our team. One of their players was on Team USA basketball, and they showed us why they were a top team in the entire state of California regardless of division level. We were down 60-2 at the half. Our players did not give up even though we were outmatched in every single facet of the game.

Top scorer: Malia Zornoza - 6 points

Bullard 64 Fremont 31 - Consolation Quarterfinals

We had another difficult opponent against Division 1 Bullard (Fresno) who had a 6’3” point guard leading the way. Our defense did play well in the second and fourth quarter holding them to eight points each but our offense was inconsistent to keep up with Bullard's offensive firepower.

CSD  6-12--8-5 = 31
BHS 26--8-22-8 = 64

Halftime - Bullard led 34-18.

Top Scorers:
Malia Zornoza - 13 points
Esther Biser - 5 Points

Yosemite 66 Fremont 34 - 13th - 16th place semifinals

Our game against Yosemite (Oakhurst) was the only matchup against a Division 2 team (CSD is in Division 6), they had only eight players, but five of them were between 6’0” and 6’2” so they were a tall and big team. We started slow and did not play well as the tip-off time was at 10:30 in the morning. We finally woke up and played well in the fourth quarter but it was too late.

YHS 16-17-14-19 = 66
CSD   5--6--7-16 = 34

Halftime - Yosemite led 35-11.

Top Scorers:
Malia Zornoza - 12 points
Jada Dawson - 7 points

Fremont 62 Garces - 15th/16th Place

We did not want to leave the tournament in 16th place without a win, and exploded in the first quarter for 21 points. Our defense did not allow Garces any momentum to come back in the second half despite their trying to push the tempo.

Overall, the coaches were proud of the girls for having two practices and five games on our first week of basketball after the fall break. The team improved after each one of our four games over the weekend.

GHS   7-10--4--8 = 29
CSD 21-10-13-18 = 62

Halftime - Fremont led 31-17.

Top scorers:
Jade Dawson - 24 points
Malia Zornoza - 15 points
Mahlia Thornton - 9 points
