Student shot put athlete has her sights set on Deaflympics

Paige McDonald doesn't let her disability get in the way of competing at a high level.

For many students, the Manitoba provincial high school track and field championships will be the highlight of their athletics careers. But for Paige McDonald, she hopes it's just the beginning.

McDonald, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student at Miami School who competed in the varsity girls shot put this week, lost 80 per cent of her hearing two years ago. Her mother, Cindy, said it's a unique situation as most deaf people are either born deaf or lose their hearing from an accident.

Maryland hosts 2018 ESDAA Track & Field championships

2018 ESDAA TF ChampionshipsThe annual ESDAA (Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association) Track and Field championships were held at Maryland School for the Deaf on Saturday, May 12th, 2018 with ten schools participating in this event.

ESDAA added a new twist to the format adding a Division I and Division II classification along with overall championship. Maryland took home the title in Division I for boys and girls. In the Division II category, the championships went to St. Mary’s boys and Rochester girls.

Hearing-impaired athlete helps ISDB reach state for the first time since 2006

idahoMIDDLETON, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) The 2018 high school state track championships have come and gone. And one local school made its first appearance in more than a decade.

Zack Smith represented the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind in the 400 meter race.

He lives in Boise, but spends the school week in Gooding and he's not letting his disability stand in his way of his goals.
